Put Tableau through it’s paces with a huge database

If you are a Tableau user, you will almost certainly be familiar with the Superstore Sales database provided as a sample by Tableau, a great resource to get started with Tableau, an easy to understand data structure etc.

You probably also know that Tableau have just released version 6.0, and they have taken the performance of their product up a notch (some say 100x performance!).

So whilst we still love the superstore sales database, and its still perfect for an ad-hoc test or demo, its 9000 ish row count is not really going to stretch the new data engine.

I thought I’d supersize it.

So here is MEGASTORE SALES.

It’s HUGE.  30 Million rows.  It’s a TDE file (Tableau Data Extract), which is nearly 1GB in size – it can be downloaded in about 3 hours apparently, but I wouldn’t try and do it over a tethered iphone link.  Don’t ask how long it took to upload.

The store now operates in 2 countries, has been running 10 years, has had revenues into the many billions of dollars.  They are doing well.
